Shravan month is about to begin from 24th July. In this blog, we will discuss about the relevance of Lord Shiva in Sawan month. According to Shiv Puran, Sawan month has been considered as one of the holiest months in Hindu religion. According to Hindu calendar, it is the fifth month of the year. According to Shiv puran, it is believed that during this month, the Shravan Nakshatra rules the skies and hence, the month derives its name from this nakshatra. In this holy month devotees offer Bel-Patra, Gangajal over Shivalinga. This holy month refers many auspicious festivals and events celebrated on a large scale. Devotees offer Bel-patra, flowers, Gangajal and milk.  They fast until the sun goes down and the Akhand Diya, burns throughout. The Samudra manthan seems an important part of sawan month. Fourteen different rubies emerged from the ocean after samudra manthan. Out of fourteen, thirteen rubies were divided among the gods and the devils.  The fourteenth  ruby remained untouched as it was the deadliest poison. Lord Shiva drank the stored the poison due to which his throat become blue and he is known as “Neelkantha”.

Apart from this there is an epic behind the reason sawan somvar vrat. Once Lord Shiva visited the famous city of Amravati with Mata Parvati. She said to him, Prabhu, let us have a dice game. Lord Shiva obliged her and the game started. Meanwhile, the priest of the temple came there. Parvati turned towards him and said Please foretell who will win this game? The Brahman gave no serious thought to her question and abruptly said, Lord Shiva will win the game. But Incidentally Maa Parvati won the game. She became angry. In due course, the Brahman became a leper and started spending a miserable life. After some time a few fairies descended on the earth and pitied the fate of the priest. On asking him, the priest narrated the complete incident. One of the fairies said, you observe Monday fasts for sixteen weeks without any break. On the seventeenth Monday, prepare some holy food or prasad with flour mixed with ghee and jiggery. The fairies disappeared and the priest followed the instructions. Soon, he regained his normal health. Again when Lord Shiva and Parvati visited that temple, Parvati was surprised to see the priest. He was his normal self. Maa Parvati was happy; she also decided to observe Monday fasts for sixteen weeks. Kartikeyas Brahman friend had been in a foreign land for quite some time. Kartikeya said, I shall observe Monday fasts for sixteen weeks for happy reunion with my friend. And thus the vrat katha of “Solah Somvaar” completes.
