Historical Legend of Mohini Ekadashi Vrat
It is said that Lord Vishnu took the form of a siren to make the gods drink nectar at the time of churning the ocean. This is why this Ekadashi is called Mohini Ekadashi.
There was a city named Bhadravati on the banks of the river saraswati. ,where lived a filthy rich vaishya named Dhanapala, . He was always engaged in virtuous deeds & had five sons. The youngest among them was the arrogant & used to spend his father’s money in sinful deeds. One day, he was seen walking around the square, putting his arm around the city bride’s neck. The father got in rage & kicked him out of the house.
He wandered from day & night drowning in sorrow and grief. One day he reached the ashram of maharishi kaundilya with the influence of some virtue during the month of vaishakh. Kaundilya came after taking bath in the Ganges. Suffering from the weight of grief, Munivar went to Kaundilya and said with folded hands, Brahmin! Twilight! Have pity on me and tell someone such a fast, whose virtue can result in my liberation. ‘ Then the sage Kaundilya told that in the bright fortnight of Vaishakh month, observe the famous Ekadashi fast named “Mohini”. The sins of many births are also destroyed by virtue of this fast. Hence,Dhritabuddhi fasted according to the method described by the sage & attained salvation.
